"Film Review: "Avatar" Doesn't Live Up To The Hype

Post Globe Film Critic

One of the effects Richard Donner experimented with in the test photography for 1978’s “Superman: The Movie” was a hologram of Superman flying off the screen and over the heads of the audience. It worked, except for the small detail that the man of steel was reduced to less than a foot in length during said flight. Fortunately, Donner was in the director’s chair, not James Cameron, who would have used the effect to trumpet his achievement as the greatest in film history.

It is thirty-one years later and the world has yet to witness Superman flying off the screen. It has, however, seen The Titanic rise again. Not just once, but many times, although Cameron’s resurrection was arguable the most impressive, at least by his own measure. It has been ten years since he waved his Oscars for that film in the face of the world, and he has now returned with something that, again by his measure, is the greatest thing since creamed corn.

Is “Avatar” the greatest technical achievement in motion picture history? Hardly. The 3D is typical of today’s state of the art, with an emphasis on depth of field rather than things popping out of the screen for shock value. The live action scenes look like they are taking place in a sno-globe, while the CGI stuff suffers from the unstable dimensions of the moving figures. I sat in two locations during the course of the picture. In the fifth row from the front, the image filled my field of vision, but the quality was poor, In the back row the image had no visceral impact but was quite lovely in appearance.

As for the other technical aspects, I will have to leave that up to the critics who are able to seriously argue such things as the comparative merits of “Transformers 2” versus “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.” I have never been impressed by claims of technical achievement in films that are otherwise mediocre. I tend to cherish and remember scenes from movies that are achieved through simple things such as composition and light, not laptop design lab.

The background artwork, although well-done, with some excellent landscapes and vistas, does not supplant the memory of the more naturalistic forests  of Walt Disney's "Bambi." The creatures are imaginative, but there are too few of them, For a planet this rich in vegetation, the variety of life forms would be much more diverse. Regardless, Cameron makes sure that our eyes are always well-nourished with a constant flow of unusual sights.

But  impressive images alone are not enough to keep a seat warm for three hours. For that, you need a good story, and the one Cameron tells is pretty crackerjack. The high-tech military of Earth is planning an invasion of the planet Pandora in order to steal its natural resources.   Jake, a paraplegic Marine, gathers intelligence for the invasion by the falling asleep and awaking on Pandora in the virtual form of one of its humanoid natives. Before long, he goes native, falls in love with a local girl, and leads the resistance movement against the invaders.

The most entertaining sequence pulls a reversal of the Tarzan-Jane roles, when Neytin, the native girl with whom Jake falls in love, teaches him that survival in the jungle is a matter of learning to trust the instinctive movements of the body rather than the reliance upon the sometimes inaccurate calculations of the mind. There are similarities here to both “Starship Troopers” and “Apocalypto,” though both of those films are superior to “Avatar,” the former for its wit and verve, the latter for the irrepressible energy of its idiotic chase mentality.

“Avatar” is a film that exists primarily to be admired. As an object of cinematic beauty, it is too flawed to impress any but the most ardent suitors.  The acting is not so much bad as non-existent. Sigourney Weaver, playing Dr, Grace Augustine, who seems to be in charge of the Avatar Project, and exuding less humanity than the CGI creatures, comes across like a wax figure in a department store toy display. Stephen Lang, as the adversarial Colonel Miles Quarich. plays his scenes like a psychotic GI Joe doll. The only character with a chance of winning our hearts is Zoe Saldana’s Neytin, maybe because she is such a perfect cross between a human being and a cartoon.

Much as James Cameron would like to see himself as the one who ushers in the second century of Motion Picture magic with the show to end all shows, he is not that herald. But until such a herald arrives, the one who will truly change the nature of movies and moviegoing for 21st century audiences, there will be plenty of pictures like “Avatar” to carry on the existing traditions.

RE: live actiion, cgi
if that is true, then let me amend my statement to :
the scenes on Earth look like they are taking place in a sno-globe, while those on Pandora suffer from the unstable dimensions of the moving figures.

You could not be more wrong
This movie is simply amazing. The way that it deals with technology, the earth and war is so incredible. The race and the culture it creates is deep, immersive and has a great message to boot. The characters are funny and moving. It is simply amazing what Cameron has pulled of here. And oh yeah, what a VISUAL TREAT. Such imagination and detail. He creates his own fauna, creatures, religion race and language.

This guys review is very limited in my opinion. See this movie.

by all means, see the movie. i'm not knocking it, simply arguing that it does not tower over every movie that came before it.

Avatar Was Stunning
I couldn't disagree more. Avatar is simply the best movie to hit the screens since Star Wars amazed us 30 years ago.

Bill White's review of Avatar
Hi Bill,
I have read your review carefully and thoroughly. You have truly put the cat amongst the pidgeons Bill!
First, Avatar is in a different league; time and place to any of the movies you have compared it to.
Second, in terms of the wording you use in your review -granted, is neither slapstick nor comedy so i agree with you it is not'funny'. It should perhaps be acknowledged however, Bill, that the movie, never purported to be a comedy and nor did the audience think they were paying for something "funny". The public lined up and will continue to pay homage to this film, - not because they thought in your words, the film should be "funny or exciting" but because this is a SCI FI film that delivers a huge payload; usually only experienced by us when we read SCI Fi literature; - but now visualised and experienced more fully and so beautifully in James Cameron's offering to us.
There were many moments of deep relief, euphoria for the audience and pure joy - We laughed at times; we admired the protaginists own levity at other times. James Cameron has caused us to think, to review, to reflect, to perhaps understand, to care more than before, to consider that there is a better way of living and being.
What more can a movie do Bill?

Incredible Movie!
Avatar replaced the original Alien, as my favorite Science Fiction movie. And as Joseph Campbell said, our myth comes from the future today, and not the past. Republicans will hate this movie, because the corporate raiders and mercenaries are the likely outcome of their philosophy 150 years in the future.

Review Of Avatar
To each his own. Everyone has opinions and a right to those opinions, however, if you are reading this, disregard the comment Mr. White made about the movie Avatar not being worth all the, "hype". It certainly is worth every penny spent. Go see the movie for yourself. You will not be disappointed.

Review of Review of Avatar
Mr. White, I read your post and then tonight i went and saw the movie. Not only did it surpass my expectations ten-fold, Everyone in the audience absolutely loved it. I will go head to head to say that this movie is the best ever created, now that's my opinion of course, but this is a very unique film, One that doesn't follow the usual story lines that are redone by different actors every year. This is truly a movie worth paying the money for, its the best 7.50 i spent this month! I actually got more then i payed for, id have easily paid 20 bucks to see this! When I left building I couldn't help but reflect, and think about what we've done as a race to our planet. your right, this isnt a funny movie, but nobody thats paid for a ticket has ever thought that... ever. so bill, you live up to your "film critic" status, but I say: You didnt give credit where it was due. Bad form mate, bad form.
and thats all i have to say about that.

Dances with the Last Samurai anyone?
When did spending a boatload of money tell us whether an idea was credible? Yes if you’re a New Yorker you have your Bloomberg’s, but what about art? What happened to storytelling, plot, and form? Yes the movie was pretty but it didn’t make sense. The acting was sub par, and all this was from James Cameron. This man was the same director to create arguably the greatest sequel of all time let alone the highest grossing film.
Avatar is truly a sight to behold in IMAX 3D. To go as far as to say best film of the year, better yet the decade. NO. The story was so shallow I walked out of the theatre and my feet had already dried from the depth of emotion. I mean really, how many times do we have to watch an indigenous people overcome their obstacles by the help of one Caucasian Male? I’m wondering, an intelligent species is about to be eradicated and all they can think of is coming together to sing Kum Ba Yah? How can this movie be taken seriously it doesn’t even take itself seriously. You put 300 million into a film and this is what you get. George Lucas took us to another galaxy. James Cameron took us to our backyard and colored it blue.
What is funny is that this 3D technology is trying to grab you but when you go to reach there is nothing there, figuratively and literally.

Great movie :)
In my own personal opinion, I think this is one superb movie!
I simply dont understand why people have to be biased, but that is their own choice and their own opinion, and everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how wrong it is.
Yes this movie is pretty, But on top of top-notch CG, this movie offered a deep and moving story line, James Cameron really knows how to move an audience... an audience who appreciates a good movie. That being said, Chris says this movie cant be taken seriously, well chris i suppose youd have to have a positive IQ in order to understand and appreciate the moral and message of the story. James Cameron spent alot of time and effort into the Story-line and the dialogues for the audience to understand it easily. ive seen similar movies that your lost from the beginning because you blinked your eyes and lost a key moment, but James Cameron displayed exactly what he wanted us to see, He voiced exactly what he wanted us to hear, and he emphasized exactly what he wanted us to feel. This movie can not be related to in anything prior to this, I feel as if this has created a different genre all together, and i hope that there is a second one, i mean a good second one :) It really goes to show that if we arent the only beings out there, that they dont act and talk exactly like us, how can they? that Aliens might have a stronger connection with their life source, the planet that provides for them, as the native-americans did before america killed them all off. its almost as if he also went to show what a destructive people we are as in comparison to others who live with the planet, instead of on the planet. i give this movie a 15 out of 10. and if you didn't enjoy this movie, then i'm sorry, but to those who read these posts, don't be swayed by the intolerance and insensitive opinions of those who don't enjoy anything at all.
It is worth the money for the message alone, but you also get a fantastic story and entertainment that hasn't measured up to this in years and years. It is truly a sight to behold, and one you can take your kids to.
I personally would say (as apposed to chris) that this movie is the best film of the year, better yet the decade, YES!
So if you havent seen it, what on earth do you have to lose? We have all payed for movies that we thought were going to be awesome, but let us down for pretty much the entire movie, well this movie... Avatar.... isnt one of those. It will NOT let you down.

RE: Great movie :)
You are right Terrence. "Avatar" is well worth the price of admission. And it is a movie the whole family can enjoy together. It is also very simplistic so there is little chance of anyone, even if they are not paying strict attention, to miss the message. It is also important to be reminded that military might is not always superior to spiritual energy, a lesson that has been taught at least since the story of David and Goliath. And it also delivers the goods in a way that most movies don't. But it falls short of its ambitions to be a quantum leap forward in film technology, Sure, it is better than Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda.... but that isn't saying much. And it is surley superior to a;; the junk being made by amateurs like Paranormal Activities and Cloverdale. But within 20 years, i wouldnt be surprised if twelve year old kids are making films as good as this on their laptops.

just a few points
I liked the movie, I think the animation was very well made, the images were beautiful, the movements of the creatures were delicate and very natural looking (although really was expecting something more breath-taking and jaw-dropping 3D almost holographic effects), all the sci-fi stuff was sort of credible, and the fight and destruction scenes were, well, pretty good for nowaday's standards, and god, the vegetation of that fake world was amazing.
I think it was a good eye catching movie, fun 3 hours to share with family, and a very commendable (though not so succesful) attempt of a moral fable... but I'm afraid I have to agree with the reviewer and some comments in that it had just too many flaws to be considered as something more than a nice animation movie.
For those that got excited enough as to say James Cameron is the ultimate word in creativity genious, do yourselves a favour and spend a couple of months with Mr. Tolkien books, Mr. Cameron must have done a trip or two to some Amazon jungle reserve or watched some very well made documentaries about nowadays surviving native jungle tribes, and that's about as much it can be said about his creativity, because it doesn't take much of a genious to put christmas lights inside Amazon's gorgeous and overwhelming vegetation and paint some natives in blue giving them elves ears, and Mr. White points it well, just about 5 or 6 different animals populating that world (a dog, a rhino, a horse, a deer and two birds), now that was extremely artificial looking, not to say a very lame exercising of imagination, I mean, I've seen far more great attempts of screen alien creatures development in the discovery and the natgeo channels than in this movie.
And the story and characters, well, what can be said, the typical idiotic vehement physical but very well intentioned and good hearted gringo, in this case militar, right there back to back with forrest gump and rambo and chuck norris, ready to save the world and risking their nonexistant lives for the sake of a happy ending, falling in love with the enemy, losing some friends in the process, having such convenient bursts of enlightment that turns them into messianic icons, yeah, pretty much the standard action movie hollywood hero and his court.
So in conclusion, a nice animation movie, but nothing more.

RE: just a few points
To put it as bluntly as possible; you both are idiots.

Now I am no James Cameron fanboy, and was actually a tad bit leery when I first stepped into the the theater. From what I had seen of the trailer made me question its quality from what I saw of it. However by the time those two and a half hours were over, I was quite literally speechless. The film blew my mind at the quality of the motion capture, CGI, and 3-D effects the used. Granted the story was a tad cliche, but as the saying goes; you can't fix was isn't broken. I really don't know where your drawing your opinions from. To be quite honest I think you should study some critics of REAL caliber such as Roger Ebert. That guy knows what he is talking about.

Oh and by the way, Bill, something I noticed, whenever I googled your name only brought up a Texas Mayor and Neo-Nazi. Yet when I type in the names of critics such as Ebert, Maltin, and Shalit I actually get relevant results. Funny huh? Goes to show just how much your reviews are worth compared to such people. Come to think of it I did not even see your name in any of the results for top critic in Rotten Tomatoes. Further proof that your opinion is not one worth paying attention to.

So in conclusion, I suggest you take my words to heart and try to relearn your craft because currently you don't seem able to tell a great movie from a piece of crap. But hey, to each his own I suppose

Now that I have gotten done typing up this monster of a rant,

Peace Out,

Tbora

The Story's The Thing
I haven't yet seen "Avatar." But from what I've heard and read, Bill White's review has done an outstanding job of wrapping the matter into a ball. And the matter is that "Avatar," although visually stunning (I suspect the foley aspects of the audio will also be outasite) lacks a compelling story.

Unfortunately, those of tender years today often have too much video game in their blood. They tend not to savor, to prefer, to appreciate substance over form.
