Executive Candidates Debate King County's Green Future

Last night, the candidates for King County Executive met at Town Hall for a debate on the environmental problems facing the county. The candidates had similar views for the future of the county, as every candidate opposed an increase in county or property taxes to support programs, supported a strong transit system, and unanimously agreed upon the county’s responsibility in the Duwamish river pollution problem. But, they had mixed reactions to the problem of the much-needed Eastside railway. While all candidates expressed interest in purchasing the corridor, they settled on what became a recurring theme in last night’s debate: who or what will fund it?

Moderated by Clifford Traisman of the Washington Environmental Council & Washington Conservation Voters, the debate pitted four potential candidates against one another: State Representative Ross Hunter, Councilman Larry Phillips, State Senator Fred Jarrett and Councilman Dow Constantine. Susan Hutchinson was invited, but did not attend.

Phillips pushed his environmental action agenda "Green Print" saying it would improve existing programs and create new ones as well. Candidates Jarret and Hunter have backgrounds in management, with Jarret’s 35 years as a project manager at Boeing and Hunter’s 17 years at Microsoft as management. Both cited these backgrounds in the debate. "We need to change the way the county thinks about managing itself," said Jarret.

Dow Constantine made a strong showing, touting his experience as an elected official and popular supporters like the Sierra Club and the Cascade Bicycle Club  throughout the debate. He displayed his passion for the environment while talking about the Puget Sound pollution problem. "We need to stop the damage, and stop the projects pushing past our environmental regulations…it can’t wait," he said.

Hutchinson's absence was noted with one audience member shouting, "Where’s Susan?" Hutchinson was said to have a prior engagement for last night, and her campaign stuck by that story when contacted this morning.

Run Ross "Microsoft Subsidy Bill" Hunter OUT of the King County Executive Race
Run Ross Hunter, Microsoft's Subsidy Bill Sponsor, Out of the King County Exec Race

MS documents on Washtech's blog reveal that the "Microsoft subsidy bill" (HR. 1487) is part of "Microsoft’s efforts to change state laws on immigration."

In a misleading statement, Rep. Ross Hunter, sponsor of the bill, remarked to the Seattle Times that he was responding to a "bunch of people in my district" -- allowing readers to conclude that visa workers lobbied for such a benefit.

They did not. At an average salary of $92,000 in addition to generous benefits, these foreign citizens temporarily stationed at Microsoft had no such hand in shifting public funds to employees of Microsoft.

But Microsoft's lobbyists did - and even drafted the legislation, according to the documents. This "audacity of arrogance " is a callous disregard for the rule of law, fair play, and the democratic process.

But it could not have occurred without the flawed judgment displayed by Ross Hunter.

Hunter has proven he can't be trusted with government funds. He's running for King County's Executive, a race he wants to win on August 18th. This race makes him vulnerable right now.

Can you use your power to defeat Microsoft's candidate by donating $14.87 to one of his opponents?

• Alan Lobdell www.alanlobdell.com
• Susan Hutchison www.susanhutchison.com
• Dow Constantine www.dowconstantine.com

Don't promote Ross Hunter. He has proven that he will take a hacksaw to the ladder of opportunity that Washington state residents - with an average income of $42,000 - so desperately need to move into the middle-class: good schools and a college degree.

Send $14.87 to one of his opponents (or all!) to make sure that he loses the race:

Ross Hunter fiddled with special purpose legislation to fund Microsoft private interests with taxpayer dollars - while he burned $1.5 billion off the state's education budget, cut 2500 teachers and eliminated health insurance for 110,000 displaced with.

Show him -- and his opponents -- that decisions like this will be met with defeat:

• Alan Lobdell www.alanlobdell.com
• Susan Hutchison www.susanhutchison.com
• Dow Constantine www.dowconstantine.com

Please forward this to your friends and family.

While defeating Ross Hunter will be priceless, you'll receive this thrill for only $14.87.
