Free scooter parking in Seattle?

City Councilman Tim Burgess has an interesting post on his Facebook page, asking people: "Hey, should street parking for 2-wheel cycles and scooters 500cc and smaller be FREE citywide?"

He just said in an email that he and Councilwoman Sally Clark are indeed researching what that would take, but have no specific proposal yet.

A few people responded to his post that they liked the idea, though a couple noted it would be easy for people to steal the parking stickers.

free parking for scooters
If it was free city-wide, all they would need would be a permanent sticker on the scooter. Hard to steal if it won't come off! It would also be cheaper than printing a new sticker everytime, and since there wouldn't be any fees to cover the cost, that would be a big savings.

Scooters
Yes, those of us who are trying to save on gas by riding our scooters around Seattle would love to have free parking. Please follow through with this proposal to provide us with free parking stickers.
Thank you.

free scooter parking
I don't think any two-wheeled motorized vehicle should have to pay for parking. This is what the city needs to do:

1) Charge a fee for unlimited scooter/motorcycle parking (regardless of cc) anywhere in the city.
2) Establish scooter/motorcycle parking spots every two blocks. Take one slot away from cars and give that to us. Alternately, let us park anywhere on the street
3) Give riders a sticker that's the same type of sticker that gets put on license plates (i.e. license tab stickers) so that someone can't steal the sticker.

I guarantee that if the city did that they'd make *more* money because then anyone with a scooter/motorcycle wouldn't be trying to cheat all the time. I would pay for something like this. Absolutely. Because right now, I'm cheating the city and they are making no money off of me.

Motorcycle parking
If the city is serious about diminishing traffic congestion then this sounds like a step in the right direction. However a one two punch would be to add more designated motorcycle parking spaces. The number available is disproportionate to the number of motorcycles registered in Seattle compared to cars and light trucks (aka SUV's).

Mr. Burgess has my vote.
I currently pay for on-street parking for my Vespa quite at least a few times a week. I don't mind paying in principle, but I think it's preposterous that (dedicated motorcycle spaces or not) a small scooter pays the same price for on-street parking as a Buick Roadmaster station wagon.
